Many SIM, NIDS and NBAD solutions have some sort of "blacklist" functionality which highlights when systems on your network interact with IP addresses that have been identified as being associated with scanning, virus propogation, SPAM originators and so on. These solutions typically take one or more lists of potentially "bad" IP addresses and then scour your netflow, IDS, firewall or other types of logs and to see if there are any correlations. This blog entry will focus on how these types of events can be analyzed.

Tenable Network Security has released version 3.2.1 of the Nessus vulnerability scanner. This point release includes a variety of small bug fixes as well as a new report filtering interface for the Nessus client. Recently, several images were uploaded to the SecViz - Security Visualization web site which visualize how hard the Nessus, Saint and Retina vulnerability scanners actually work. Default scans for each scanner were performed in full view of a Snort sensor and the alerts from Snort were sent to Prelude for visualization with "pig".
